![]() ![]() After spending time living in Austria, where her parents were migrant workers, the family returned to Udine, where the young Modotti worked in a textile factory. Her mother, Assunta, was a seamstress her father, Giuseppe, was a mason. Modotti was born Assunta Adelaide Luigia Modotti Mondini in Udine, Friuli, Italy. In 1922 she moved to Mexico, where she became an active member of the Mexican Communist Party. In San Francisco, Modotti worked as a model and, later, as a photographer. She left Italy in 1913 and moved to the United States, where she settled in San Francisco with her father and sister.
